Custom Slate Hearth Surround – Rustic Elegance with Mountain Character
Artisan Craftsmanship Meets Functional Design in a Cozy Cabin Corner
In the heart of this warm and welcoming living space, natural materials take center stage to create a handcrafted slate hearth surround that perfectly complements the cabin’s rustic charm. Designed and built by Jesse Schacher, owner of Blue Slate, Inc., this custom hearth surround blends the organic texture of slate flagstone with repurposed rusty, thick-gauge metal and artistic masonry, resulting in a one-of-a-kind focal point that enhances both form and function.
A Thoughtful Composition of Stone and Steel
Every detail of this corner hearth was carefully considered—from the angled slate base that mirrors the lines of the freestanding propane heating stove, to the aged, rustic steel “wall panels” that frame the space with vintage character. Above, a solid 1½” thick 6″ wide slate mantel extends on both sides, adding depth and continuity. Rising beyond the slate mantel, pieces of ¾” slate were hand-cut and arranged like a puzzle to form a bold mountain silhouette in stone, capturing the rugged beauty of nature in a uniquely elegant design. The result is a stove hearth with timeless appeal—where rustic warmth and artisan skill converge.
