Introduction to Landscape Borders
Landscape borders play an essential role in defining and enhancing the visual appeal of your outdoor spaces. An elegant and functional border not only organizes different elements of your garden but also adds texture and contrast. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of creating a landscape border using Eagle Mountain slate ledgestone and filling it with Woodstone decorative rock.
Materials Needed
Before diving into the project, gather all necessary materials. You will need:
- Ledgestone or building stone
- Woodstone Decorative Rock (or another decorative rock)
- Garden gloves
- Garden Trowel
- Hand Tamper (Optional)
- Shovel
- Rake
- Wheelbarrow
- Scissors (or another cutting tool, utility knife)
- Landscape fabric
- Garden Hose
Having all these items at hand will help streamline the process and ensure a successful installation.

Step-by-Step Installation Process
To create your landscape border, follow these simple steps:
- Prepare the Site: Clear the area with a shovel and a rake where you plan to install the border. Remove any plants, grass, roots or debris.
- Define the Outline: Use a garden hose or string to mark the desired shape of your border.
- Excavate the Area: Dig a shallow trench (just an inch or so deep x just a little wider than the slate you plan to use for edging) along the marked outline. This will help secure the slate ledgestone (or building stone) in place.
- Install a durable landscape fabric: Lay the landscape fabric down on the ground so that it covers the entire area where the slate edging will be installed, as well as, the border area that will be covered with WoodStone. Leave 3-4 inches of fabric along each side of the entire border and edging area until the project is finished. When finished, trim the fabric where needed with scissors or a utility knife. Use fabric stakes to secure the fabric and prevent the wind from blowing the fabric around before the slate and WoodStone are installed. Overlap the landscape fabric by 3-4 inches where needed to help prevent weeds from growing.
- Install the Slate Ledgestone: Start placing the Eagle Mountain Slate ledgestone in the trench, ensuring the stones are level and in line with each other.
- Add Decorative Rock: Fill the area inside the border with Woodstone Decorative Rock, creating an eye-catching contrast with the ledgestone.
By following these steps, you can easily create a beautiful landscape border that enhances your garden’s aesthetics.
